MARTII // Traduzione: L'Università dei Filosofi e dei Medici che un tempo inaugurò l'opera per mezzo di questi stemmi, documenti di virtù, comprovati da ciò che sommi uuomini hanno lasciato a memoria di sè, altri aggiungendone anche dalla parte inferiore, decorò tutto il Ginnasio con questa artistica opera, e perché gli studiosi della Facoltà filosofica e medica da questi esempi e dalla loro singolare magnificenza fossero infiammati a raggiungere quelle virtù, e la maestà e la bellezza del luogo meglio rispondesse alla grandezza di quelle stesse virtù e alla dignità di coloro che da questa sede professano, e perché la memoria della splendida virtù di Lopo Varona, rettore ugualmente ammirabile dell'Università di Bologna e del Collegio di Spagna, fosse propoagata presso i posteri con l'onore di questa perpetua testimonianza. 1580, 1° marzo. Translation: The University of philosophy and medicine which once began these distinguished monuments, documents of virtues attested by the greatest men, later adding more from the lower part, has adorned the whole University with this outstanding art, both so that the students of the faculty of sacred philosophy and medicine should be encouraged by these examples and by their singular magnificence to strive towards these virtues, and that the majesty and beauty of the place should better correspond to the worthiness of those who teach from this seat, and also so that the memory of the famous virtue of that illustrious man Lope Varona, who ruled both the whole University of Bologna and the sacred College of Spain with admirable wisdom, should be passed on to future ages, honoured by this perpetual testimony, 1 March 1580.
