Per 55 anni insegnò con somma chiarezza filosofia nel patrio Ginnasio, mostrando acuto ingegno, pronta e costante memoria, copiosa eloquenza; ebbe più di 3000 uditori, e tra loro uomini egregi, il cui nome e le cui opere il tempo non cancellerà; con arguzia d'ammonimenti e dolcezza di spiritosi detti inseriti nel suo insegnamento riempì i giovani di grandissimo desiderio d'imparare e di pratica saggezza. Fu canonico attentissimo della chiesa di San Petronio; ricevuto tra le persone che godevano l'intima familiarità e là benevolenza di Benedetto XIV papa, da lui ricevette numerosissime lettere, dal primo all'ultimo anno di regno, piacevolissime; ed ebbe l'onore del camerierato. Morì l'anno 1780 al 24 di marzo; visse anni 91 e giorni 7; gli uditori ancora viventi posero come segno della loro gratitudine. Translation: To Pietro Francesco Peggi, who deserved well concerning men's minds. For fifty-five years he taught philosophy with amazing clarity in the University of his homeland, making use of sharp intelligence, fast and reliable memory and most fertile richness of language. He had more than three thousand hearers, among them men of surpassing intelligence whose name and deeds time will not obliterate. By spicing his teaching with sharp warnings and charming wit, he imbued his students with the greatest desire for learning and prudence of life. He performed devoutly as Canon of the famous church of San Petronio. He acquired intimate familiarity and benevolence from Pope Benedict XIV, from whom he often received most pleasing letters, from the beginning to the end of his reign and was made an honorary gentleman of the bedchamber. He died on 24 March 1780. He lived 91 years and 7 days. His surviving audience placed this monument of gratitude.
