1. The Frati Sorbelli catalogue

The catalogue contains the bibliographic descriptions of the printed material, including periodicals, acquired before 1960 (many old books acquired and catalogued beginning from 1961 are described in more recent catalogues of the library).
It is structured in four sections: AUTHORS (AUTORI), SUBJECT (ARGOMENTO), BIOGRAPHIC TOPICS (SOGGETTI BIOGRAFICI), and GEOGRAPHIC TOPICS (SOGGETTI GEOGRAFICI):

The AUTHORS section contains documents of which the author is known (or the title, if the work is anonymous); the compound lastnames are arranged so they can be found in different forms, ex: De Sanctis or Sanctis (De); sometimes the names are italianized, ex: Omero and not Homerus; Cicerone, Marco Tullio and not Cicero, Marcus Tullius
- The section by SUBJECT contains documents on the specific topic
- The section by BIOGRAPHIC TOPICS contains documents on a specific person
- The section by GEOGRAPHIC TOPICS contains documents on a specific location

2. The Classification

The pressmark is the sequence of numbers, letters or words that indicate the position of the book in the shelves of the library. In the principle cards of the catalogue you find in the bottom left:

The reference cards instead redirect you from a form of the heading to another: at the bottom left you find a V (=look) followed by the search voice:

The cards of the sections divided by SUBJECT, BIBLIOGRAPHIC and GEOGRAPHIC TOPICS, are all cards of reference. Since the cards were arranged (and will be arranged) and standardised, there con happen cases of "Reference" without a matching in the main cards.

The pressmark it's an essential data to find the item: please do not select "reference" cards, without pressmark, when using the on-line reservation service.

3. Free Search (Ricerca libera)

The Search can be done only on the title of the Cards, with the following criteria:
- the "AND" operator is automatically added between the typed terms
- It is possible to utilise the asterisk character * at the end of the word to substitute any number of characters (ex: abb* will give the results Abbazia, Abbigliamento, etc.)
- The searches are not case sensitive, ex: searching bologna, Bologna, or BOLOGNA will provide the same results
- The searches are not sensitive to accent character or other specific character ex: searching citta or città will provide the same results
- Non textual characters (apostrophes, hyphens, commas, etc.) are not considered search terms and can be omitted.

4. List Search (Ricerca per lista)

The list search permits the skimming of every section in alphabetical order, starting from the term or group of letters specified.

If the term is not present, the list will go to the following term.
